Living in another world

The New World

And so I will be leaving

Shot far from the soil that birthed me

From the morning’s eucalypt tang

From the magpie’s wurdling call

From rust and the dust indistinguishable

Red centre and outback will take new meanings

Familiar expressions slowly subsumed

There’ll be no more summers down the beach

I’ll go now to the shore

Pine barrens will replace the Bush and

I’ll learn to navigate my world by exits

You can teach a weary soul new sins

And I’ve been such a very weary soul

There’s no denying

It’s a hard thing to live so far from your place of origin

But nowhere near so hard as being far from

The one who makes you live.
