Immigrant song

Daughter

He was beguiled by

America

Not by her golden shores

Nor her purple mountains

But by one particular daughter

Among the many

though, his eyes saw just this one

This one for whom he’d

Cross the ocean

Burn his bridges

And forsake his kin

Without a backward glance

He left hearth

Deserted home

Embraced his only son and

Stepped across the space that

Had kept her from his arms

That old red string of fate

Led him straight to her door

His heart pounding as he waited on the mat

Then all in an instant

She stood in the doorway before him

And in the gleam of her tearful eyes

He made his new home.

Everything in its right place

Solitude’s final moments

The long suspension draws

To its end

This broad expanse contracting by increments

Soon now the window between us will open and

The light will shine only from your upturned face

You will fold yourself against me

In a world without time

And I will gather you up

My bounty

My great reward

I am hurtling towards you now

Can you sense me?

Though I am yet to depart

I am already in motion

I am coming my love

Coming to claim my prize

Brace yourself.

Stateside

At distance

You can see a long way from here

Right across the water

Past all the people who keep their heads down

And never ever make waves

Past the zealots and the liars

The false prophets and the awful machines

Details are sketchy

Too many shadows

But a single point of light

Beyond my horizon

Is all that consumes me now

It blinds my eyes

Stabs deep into my brain

And calls in the softest of voices

Come to me

I am waiting

So I’ll make that journey

Through the broken lands

Across the ocean of tears

To bathe in that glow

And remember again

I am not alone.

The loneliest guy

Is what is

Loneliness is the absence of touch

Watching her cry through a plastic screen

Wanting to cradle her pain in your arms

But having only the makeshift sling of your words

To offer her

It is a kind of impotence no one else could understand

Because life’s not just a bunch of words

Words are meant to record life, relate life

Cannot be life

Cannot make life

Loneliness is when you cannot

Kiss away her tears

Stroke her hair

Or hold her hands in yours

So if words are all you have

They’d better be spectacular

Or at the very least, pretty damned clever

Because if she’s still crying at the end of that call

You’re both going to spend the night

In the loneliest place on Earth.

The weight

Collide with me

Time is eating us alive

Days I should be spending in your arms

Eroded in a sandstorm of wasted moments

I feel myself growing older inside this longing

Becoming less than you deserve

But that’s only this body

This spirit, determination, perseverance

Remain vital

Everything else is in the lap of the gods

For now there’s only this

Waiting impatiently for our world’s to collide.

I can’t help myself

Isolation.jpg

A confusion of delusions

I look for you in everyone I see

Can’t help myself

I know you’re an entire world away

Entire life away

But still I scan the plains of every face

looking for your eyes

Your lips

That look which

Only you, in all my time, have ever shown me

I search for you in desperation

Desperation to see your face

Desperate not to face

The distance

The vastness

That lies between us

When I’ve had you in my arms

on my skin

Beneath my fingers

How can I accept this truth

That the woman crossing the street in front of me

With your hair

Your walk

The tilt of your head

Can never be you?

Words and image are my own.

Watch the world argue

Love among the haters

What is this strength, day after day

That keeps us from giving in and going mad

Under this cruel tyranny of distance?

While the rest descend into frothing insanity

Over a contest between two fools

How do we live sane inside this loneliness?

In a world where people long to be divided

How can two souls who crave connection

Gain any solace from the separatists all around us?

Love is our everything in a world burning with hate

How do we go on? From what deep well of hope

Does our belief in the future spring?

Hold on my love, I’m coming soon

We’ll close the gaping void between us

As the continental drift of fear and hate pulls the world apart.

Morningless

Thoughts I left home with today

We’re supposed to be moving into summer here

But the mornings just keep getting colder

As if my need to be back in her world

Is changing the weather

Moving me closer to her

By degrees

Perhaps the hemispheres will sync

If only in our dreams

Perhaps I’ll open a door one day

And she’ll be standing there

Her face alight with that smile I love

She’ll drop her coat

Step into my arms

And we’ll just let worlds collide.
